Description
Volume I of Hanseatic Cooking, Compleat Anachronist 207, introduces English-speaking readers to the culinary world of the Hanseatic cities. Dating back to the twelfth century, merchants from what today is called northern Germany sailed the Baltic Sea to trade as far away as Estonia and Russia. At one point, the Hanseatic League consisted of over 200 towns and cities located in modern-day countries such as Germany, Poland, Estonia, Sweden, and Russia. The topic of Hanseatic foodways is still under-researched and difficult to access for anyone not proficient in German and Low German.
Hanseatic Cooking, Volume I, focuses on the history of the Hansa and start to delve into the food, including English translations and modern adaptations of the original German and Low German recipes. Written by a professionally published SCA chef and translator, Volume I focuses on various meats, including poultry, giving SCA cooks a new resource for their meat dishes at feasts. Volker Bach also includes comments based on his own experiences with these recipes.
